Berlin: A City of Surprises for Birdwatchers

Berlin is home to a wonderfully diverse population of birds that are easily accessed by resident and tourist alike. The city’s large and plentiful parks and waterways combined with its low density and history of abandoned spaces make it a suitable habitat for many species that aren’t often seen in an urban environment.

Even a short visit to one of the city’s major parks or waterways will be worthwhile for both novice and experienced birdwatchers. Goshawks and Skylarks breed in the city’s most popular parks, Nightingales serenade passersby along the Spree, and careful observers can find Icterine Warblers, Redstarts, and other summer visitors with just a short turn off the beaten path. And the best part is that you’re likely to be near a great Biergarten when you’re done!

Could you help ID 2 birds I saw in Berlin recently? One was like the US Chickadee (perhaps a Tit?) and the other was pale brownish with a light reddish face and throat, about the size of a US Bluebird. Both were in brushy small trees at our hotel not far from the Olympic stadium. Thanks!
